1927 Miss America contestants. Miss America 1927, the seventh Miss America pageant, was held at the Million Dollar Pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey on September 9, 1927. The winner was 16-year-old Lois Delander who competed as Miss Illinois. She won the Miss America title on her parents' twentieth wedding anniversary. This marked the last pageant to be held in the 1920s, the next Miss America competition would not be held until 1933
Great Miss America history lesson here: Vanessa Williams, left, became the very first African American woman to be crowned Miss America, back in 1983. The lady to her right is Suzette Charles, her first runner up. Sadly, once it was revealed that Williams had posed for compromising photos for Penthouse magazine, she was forced to relinquish her crown to Charles, who completed the remainder of Williams' reign for the following year.
Nina Davuluri, Miss New York, was crowned the new Miss America on Sunday night in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Miss New York, the second Miss America winner from her state in the past two years, gracefully proves that pageant contestants needn't worry about onstage flubs, as she missed her cue during the talent competition earlier in the evening.
