September 29, 1547: Born, Miguel de Cervantes. The spanish author served in the Spanish Navy in his youth, and was captured by Algerian corsairs and put into slavery for 5 years. Later he worked as a tax collector, but discrepancies in his accounts landed him in prison. It was there, he said, that he initially got the idea for his great work, Don Quixote.
