St Mawes Castle, Cornwall - St Mawes Castle and its twin across the other side of the River Fal, Pendennis Castle, were two of a series of coastal forts and castles built by King Henry VIII as protection against potential invaders such as the Spanish. The castle dates from the early 16th century.
