"This explains why the fall of Atlantis & the destruction of Númenor sound so similar." What if Tolkien intended for Atlantis and Númenor to be the same place, and also the gateway interlocking middle earth and our world?!?!
Cygnus Loop (also known as the Veil Nebula) - formed after a shockwave propagated through the material ejected during the supernova - subsequently heating up the surrounding material - causing it to glow. The nebula, which covers an expanse of space that is 6 times larger than the full moon, is ~ 2,500 light-years from Earth in Cygnus. Astronomers believe the supernova ignited 5-10,000 years ago; the light from the event first arrived on Earth at the end of the last ice age.
