1989 ♦ January 8 – British Midland Flight 92, a Boeing 737, crashes near Kegworth, Leicestershire, United Kingdom, after one of its engines loses a fan blade and fails. Of the 118 passengers and 8 crew, 79 survive. The incident became known as the Kegworth air disaster and is the first loss of a Boeing 737-400.

8 January 1989 - British Midland Flight BD 92, a Boeing 737–400, crashed onto the embankment of the M1 motorway near Kegworth, Leicestershire, in England. The aircraft was attempting to conduct an emergency landing at East Midlands Airport. Of the 126 people aboard, 47 died and 74, including seven members of the flight crew, sustained serious injuries

8 January 1989 – British Midland Flight 92, operated by Boeing 737-400 G-OBMI crashed at Kegworth, Leicestershire whilst on approach to land at East Midlands Airport. The aircraft was operating a scheduled domestic flight from London Heathrow Airport to Belfast International Airport when the port engine suffered a failure but the starboard engine was shut down. Of the 126 people on board, 47 were killed and 79 were injured.

This picture recovered from the crash site of Japan Airlines Flight 123, shows the cabin before tragedy struck. A total of 509 people were killed. There were 4 survivors. There was an explosive decompression on board caused by a faulty repair performed seven years earlier. The plane crashed 32 minutes later.

July 17, 1996 - Transnational World Airlines (TWA) Flight 800 Explosion: a Boeing 747-131 jetliner, took off from John F. Kennedy airport and gradually ascended along the Long Island shore. It was on its way to Rome via a stop in Paris. About 12 minutes into the flight, an explosion occurred, followed by several others. The jetliner, blasted to pieces, crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near East Moriches, New York. All 230 people onboard died — 212 passengers and 18 crewmembers.

This happened less that 1 mile from where I lived. I was 11 months old. December 16, 1960, United Airlines flight 826 collided with TWA flight 266. The United plane crashed in Park Slope, killing the 84 people on board and six people on the ground. At the time it was the worst air disaster in U.S. history.
