After numerous attempts on his life Cohen soon converted his house into a fortress, installing floodlights, alarm systems, and a well-equipped arsenal kept, as he often joked, next to his 200 tailor-made suits. Cohen briefly hired bodyguard Johnny Stompanato before Stompanato was killed by Cheryl Crane, the daughter of actress Lana Turner. Cohen bought a cheap coffin for Stompanato's funeral and then gave Turner's love letters to Stompanato to the press.
The coroner's inquest into the death of Johnny Stompanato was the most anticipated television event ever. This was no Peyton Place; it was the real thing. Depending on how Lana played it, her daughter was either going to walk away a free woman or be charged with the death of her mother's boyfriend. Connery was then in a Disney film next to be cast as James Bond.
On April 4th, 1958 Johnny Stompanato was stabbed to death in Lana Turner's Beverly Hills Home (730 N. Bedford Drive). The assailant was Turner's teenage daughter Cheryl Crane. Gangster Mickey Cohen paying his last respects.
Helen Gilbert was an accomplished cellist. Performing at the Hollywood Bowl, she was discovered & became a member of the MGM orchestra & in the 40's, she worked for RKO. In1949, she married Johnny Stompanato, bodyguard of infamous mobster Mickey Cohen. Stompanato later died at the hands of Lana Turner's daughter, Cheryl Crane.
