Lost British department stores

Long before John Lewis and Debenhams came to Oxford Street, there was Marshall & Snellgrove. This luxurious store was founded in the 1800s, with many other branches later opened around Britain. After struggling throughout the war years, it merged with Debenhams in 1919.

The London Department Store – a brief history –

Bon Marche, Brixton was the first purpose built department store in London, erected in 1877.

Pratts, in Streatham. Built in 1867, it eventually became part of the John Lewis group and closed in 1990.
