House of Burgesses in Williamsburg, Virginia, where Jefferson served 1769–1775

This is the House of Burgesses located in Colonial Williamsburg, VA. It was the lower house in the Colonial system of government during the mid 1700s. It emulated the British House of Commons in that its members were elected. It voted on legislation and conferred with the upper house. The House of Burgesses was certainly a seat of power for early Virginia politics.

TIL when George Washington first ran for the Virginia House of Burgesses he attributed his defeat to failing to offer enough alcohol to voters. Two years later he distributed 144 gallons of rum punch hard cider & beer - a half gallon per vote. He won the election.
