The Jacobean staircase from Sir Walter Covert's mansion Slaugham Place near Haywards Heath was sold and relocated to Lewes old town hall c1895 - formerly the Star Hotel - where it still is today. 'Thomas Sergison of Cuckfield, challenged the Whig Duke of Newcastle’s political control of Lewes Borough. He made the Star, and the coffee-house, his campaign head-quarters, and from a dismantled mansion of his, Slaugham Place, he brought the Renaissance staircase, dating from about 1600'
