Hometown hero, Harlem Globetrotter Larry “Gator” Rivers, returned to Savannah three years ago and teamed up with an old friend, Dr. Mildred McClain, a leader in environmental justice and executive director of Harambee House. Together they are launching Harambee Farms a series of community gardens throughout Savannah to provide neighborhoods with fresh, organic produce and much needed jobs for young people.

Upon experiencing the fragmentation of social networks and institutions in the aftermath of desegregation during the 1960s and '70s and loss of jobs due to de-industrialization during the 1980s, many African Americans turned to Afrocentric community ideals  in hopes of restoring stability, pride and identity in the 1990s. Others, however, pursued a cross-over appeal within the social, cultural, political and economic mainstream. This is Pittsburgh's Homewood in the 1990s. C. Matthew Hawkins
