Queen Victoria painted by Franz Winterhalter in 1844. This picture (a copy of a detail from the original) was given to Prince Albert as a gift. I don't know what it is about this particular portrait but I really like it - her face seems to be less posed and more vulnerable than we normally see. Royal Collection.
Queen Victoria,1845. Photographs taken of the Queen at this time do not much resemble this glamorous image. Winterhalter was skilled at creating an enhanced likeness. He also obligingly enlarged the Queen's jewellery.
