On this day in 1934, the first federal prisoners arrived on Alcatraz Island

The Rock opened on October 12, 1933 under the jurisdiction of the US Department of Justice. It was meant as a "last resort" for the nation's worst inmates, among them Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly and Doc Barker.
