As a beginning of the year review, together we would discuss the standard division algorithm, along with examples on their notes. This would be kept in the students math composition book.
Multiplication Array Chart~Kids pick a problem, illustrate an array on index or sticky note, then attach it to the right spot. Kids could also show in other ways such as fact family, equal groups, repeated addition, or fact families.
While division algorithms can be fairly rote, tackling remainders requires logical thinking and deeper understanding. Here are four math activities I use with my students to help them figure out what to do about remainders.
