Jewel of the Desert Garnet Ice Plant is a low growing, tough groundcover with excelent color. These spread rapidly, are water-wise once established, and offer interest in color and texture. Can be sheared back in order to control their spill onto pavement, and their root systems can help knit and stabilize soil such as on hillsides.

Ocotilla - This is a really cool neutral plant that adds a vertical element and height to the garden, yard, and landscape. It does well in the heat and harsh soil. Other than when it is in bloom the Ocotillo is a grayish neutral color that goes well in most any Southwest, desert, Arizona, or New Mexico landscaping.image by JustTooLazy, via Flickr

Yucca; architectural, drought tolerant and tough desert plant

Yucca aloifolia 'Variegata' - spectacular in bloom, and out. Watch for the sharp spines - this is a plant that demands respect. Give it a full sun situation, lots of gravel in the soil, and stand back.
