Chair

Solid ivory chair made in India 1790-1810. This chair is of a type made in small numbers in Murshidabad, the nawabi capital of Bengal, where in the second half of the 18th century craftsmen who had traditionally produced courtly articles out of ivory such as combs and fly whisks began to make western-style furniture. This piece is of solid ivory, and was originally richly decorated with gilding that has now largely rubbed off. Its shape follows contemporary European tub chairs.
