Red Cross nurse, Iola, circa 1920, by Gibson, Arthur

Clara Barton at the time she established the American Red Cross in 1881. She is 59 years old. This photograph was taken in Dansville, New York where she was living at the time.

A teacher, Clara Barton left her job at the emergence of the Civil War to dedicate herself to aiding soldiers on the front, but officials declined her help. In spite of this, she organized delivery of medical supplies from all over the country to battlefields on both sides. In 1869 she established The American Red Cross to assist in any great national disaster, not only war, and retired as it's President at the age of 83.
