Fort Moultrie, Sullivan's Island, South Carolina was built by South Carolina patriots to protect Charleston Harbor. On June 28, 1776, British warships attacked the fort. William Moultrie, commander of the 2nd South Carolina Regiment, and his 400 men fought a day-long battle which ended with the heavily damaged British warships being driven from the area. Today, the fort has been restored to reflect the story of American sea coast defense through World War II. A visitor center is nearby.

One of the most hallowed grounds in America is easily Fort Sumter just outside of Charleston, South Carolina. This Fort went down in history as the site of the first shot of the Civil War. Residents of Charleston report that the spirits of Confederate and Union soldiers roam the Fort as well as the town. Charleston is also the site where Blackbeard ran his vessel, Queen Anne's Revenge, aground. Residents insist that Blackbeard's head haunts the area to this day

The interior of the neoclassical Nathaniel Russell House in Charleston, SC....shown here is the elliptical stair case for which the house is most famous. Even by today's engineering advancements, such stairways are considered architectural marvels... how fantastic is it that this one, constructed around 1808, still stands and is functional!
