The recent Viking haul in Scotland includes possibly the largest silver Carolingian pot ever discovered, with its lid still in place. The pot is likely to have been around 100 years old when the hoard was buried in the mid 9th or 10th Centuries.

Book of Kells the famous 9th century illuminated manuscript of the gospels written by monks. It is in the Trinity College Library that was built in 1712. It is one of eight buildings on the 40-acre site that collectively hold over 4 million books - one copy of every Irish or British book published since 1801.

In 1996 someone found a Viking hoard at Westerklief on the former island of Wieringen, The Netherlands. The treasure contained Carolingian and Arab coins, bracelets and silver ingots, all buried in an earthenware pot. The coins date the treasure at around 850. Wieringen at that time was a part of Frisia.

Charlemagne, an Emperor and King who brought most of Western and Central Europe under his reign by a variety of means including military conquest. But he is not famous for just this. He was also a main force in something called the Carolingian Renaissance which changed much of Europe by bringing about a new monetary system, educational reform and a renaissance of the arts including military arts and the art of siege, often considered to be the father of what is now modern Europe.
