Berry Gordy's successful Tamla/Motown group of labels was notable for being black-owned, unlike most of the earlier independent R labels. Notable artists under this label were The Supremes, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, the Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell, Martha and the Vandellas, and The Jackson Five. Hits were made using a quasi-industrial production-line approach. Some considered the sound to be mechanistic but producers and songwriters such as;
