101st Airborne Division's 3rd Brigade and other units fought for 12 days against North Vietnamese forces before U.S. and South Vietnamese forces captured the mountain that the Americans referred to as "Hamburger Hill.


On May 10, 1969 the U.S. military began a 10 day battle to take Hamburger Hill in Vietnam. The event, heavily criticized for being senseless and unnecessary sparked more outrage against the Vietnam war and a reappraisal of U.S. strategy.
