July 22, 1934: Bank robber and jail breaker John Dillinger was killed by FBI agents at the Biograph Theater in Chicago. The infamous criminal held the attention of the press, the public and FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover and is featured in the Newseum's FBI exhibit, "G-Men and Journalists."

The guns, which were taken by federal agents in raids at St Paul and Spider Lake, Wisconsin, are on display at the Department of Justice in Washington DC. The small Colt .38 automatic was in Dillinger's possession when he was shot in Chicago on 22nd July. Also pictured are two machine guns, two rifles and a .45 automatic which has been converted into a machine gun.

After pursuing a career in crime for several years in the United States, the pressures of being pursued, notably by the Pinkerton Detective Agency, forced him to flee, first to Argentina and then to Bolivia, where he was allegedly killed in a shootout in November 1908.
