During WW2 my grandparents had an Anderson shelter in their back garden. Years after the war it was still there, being used as a garden shed.

The Anderson shelter was designed in 1938. It was named after Sir John Anderson, the man responsible for preparing Britain to withstand German air raids. Anderson shelters were designed for 6 people.

This way to the Air Raid Shelter ~ London Underground - not my London thank God, but my poor mother and her family (along with thousands of others) had to sleep there.
