After a long study, archeologists have confirmed that the oldest continuous settlement in Britain is in Wiltshire in the town of Amesbury (including Stonehenge).

Early in 1892, several Amesbury and Haverhill businessmen, including Charles Goss, L. J. Marston and W. G. Ellis, president of the Ellis Car Company of Amesbury, organized the Haverhill & Amesbury Street Railway Co. for the purpose of building an electric railway from Haverhill, through the thriving town of Merrimac, to Amesbury, a distance of approximately 11 miles.

When I visited Abingdon, I was fascinated by the originality and antiquity of this town, which is considered one of the oldest in the UK similar to Colchester, Amesbury, Ipswich or Thatcham. Some settlements in present Abingdon-on-Thames have existed since the 4th century BC.
