More older people are hospitalised every year for mental disorders related to alcohol (11,373) than for alcohol-related liver disease (9,890). This increase is far greater than the growth in the elderly population. Do Benzodiazepine Drugs “Cause” Dementia? Benzodiazepine drugs include Lorazepam (Ativan), alprazolam (Xanax), diazepam (Valium), clonazepam (Klonopin), and temazepam (Restoril). Study published in the BMJ concludes that new use of benzodiazepines was associated with increased risk of dementia in adults age>65.
