Freedman's Cemetery This area of Dallas County was settled by former African American slaves shortly after the conclusion of the American Civil War. Rosa Parks - (1913–2005) African-American civil rights activist, whom the U.S. Congress called "the first lady of civil rights", & "mother of the freedom movement". In 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Parks refused to obey bus driver's order to give up her seat to make room for a white passenger. Her civil disobedience sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
