One of the foundational images of motion capture, Etienne Jules Marey, chronophotographs from "The Human Body in Action," Scientific American (1914). By this time Marey had migrated from pure photography to abstraction, where strips of highly reflective material were applied to the limbs of a subject otherwise draped in black, so only the key elements of motion were registered. The checkerboard allowed speed to be measured by also capturing a clock.

This image represents the hidden layers of his personality. He wears a metaphorical mask of a happiness he lacks s he knows this is the bets chance of protecting his family and himself from despair. The level of his confidence and self worth is lowered when around his family as he feels even more vulnerable and this is when his facade fades but when with his colleagues he has to act strong, tough and in control to persuade them he is worthy of his status.
