His enlistment began on November 11, 1861 serving as a musician. 3 days later he would muster into Co.F of the 1st United States Sharpshooters. he would be wounded at Chancellorsville on May, 4th. He would survive and return to the unit only to be wounded once again at Cold Harbor on June 12, 1864. Almon would survive that wound as well but his time it was serious enough to earn a discharge for disability in October, 1864.
