In all, Burt Munro made ten trips to Bonneville. In 1967, at the age of 68, he set a land speed record of 185.586 mph—on a 47-year old machine with an original top speed of 55. To this day, no one has broken his record.

The wreckage of Bluebird II, the 4,200-HP jet-turbine car in which Donald Campbell, unseen, hoped to break the world land speed record, lies on the salt flats of Western Utah on Sept. 16, 1960, after it had overturned at more than 300 miles an hour in a trial run. Campbell, who was piloting the car, was injured and rushed to hospital at Tooele, Utah. Mechanics said that the ?1,000,000 car is a total write-off. It would be quicker and cheaper to build a new one. (AP Photo/Str/NAP)
