Bee Facts
Honey comprises 18 per cent water, 80 per cent natural sugars, and 2 per cent minerals, pollen, and protein. The sugar content is a combination of fructose and glucose, and the balance of these two sugars determines whether the honey is clear or set. Honeybees are sometimes mistaken for wasps (which have stripped abdomens and a sting). The main visible difference is that wasps are bright yellow, with yellow on their faces and legs. They also have longer antennae than honeybees. A wasp can sting repeatedly, but a bee can only sting once. Read more>>
Mosses and Liverworts
These are in the oldest group of true plants; this group is called the Bryophytes. Liverworts are thought to be the oldest at around 500 millions years old. They were on the earth before other plants like grass, ferns, cacti and trees. You can see this when you find moss growing on a rock, it sticks to it like a carpet rather than growing down like a tree root. They like to live in warm, moist and humid environments and are commonly found in shaded woodlands. #mosses #liverworts #ferns
Honey Bees – Life Cycle Video
Honey bees make honey from pollen and nectar collected from flowers. They live in large colonies with one queen, many sterile females workers and some male drones. In the wild honey bees nest in hollow trees. When a new queen emerges, she embarks on a mating flight. On returning to her hive, with help from the workers, she kills the failing, old queen. Alternatively, before the new queen emerges, the old queen may leave with a swarm of workers to form a new colony. #honeybees #bees #queeniebee
