each baton is made from Slate Lath which is Tanalised to resit rotting. The baton is 3" (75mm) wider than the board it's self. I used a cross cut saw to chop a packet of 15 battens at a time into the correct length.
The finished wood floor. A board used to take two people six minuets to make! You will need an 8ft x 4ft board we used 18mm Wisa-Spruce Plywood which is a softwood however it's consistent waterproof. And is much lighter to carry and has proven rugged enough to survive marquee erectors.
I found that screws were much better than nails as they were quicker to put in and could be broken battens replaced on site without damage to the board.
When the next row goes down this will lock the two boards together. At the edges a wire U hoop can be used like a very large U nail to peg the two boars together and stop them moving.
This shows several boards locked together.
The second row requires tow people. One to stand on the first row to stop them moving. A little wiggle and shove at the right angle and the second row slides under the first.
The underneath of a 4ft x 4ft "Half board"
This shows how two 4x4 boards are made up of one 8'x4' board cut in half (it's very simple) If you would like to make different lengths of wood floor you can make 2ft and 6ft half boards.
To make floors of a specific size you can make 1ft wide boards.
This is a floor just using 8ft x 2ft and 8ft x 4ft boards
As you can see you can make almost any size of floor. You can interchange the 8'x4' pattern with the 8'x2' pattern
This is a diagram of how a wood floor can be construed. This uses full boards 8ft x 4ft and half boards. 4ftx4ft. Many people use a half size system i.e 8' x 2ft it works in the same way there are more boards to carry but they weigh half as much. In my opinion the 8'x4' boars are easier to transport and quicker to lay.
