Sadler’s Wells East on the East Bank development at the Olympic Park, Stratford, London opens in 2024. The design has many distinctive features, a major focal point is the cantilevered canopy which runs the length of the frontage. Designed to carry a precast green roof, there were a number of design challenges, including the very high support loadings carried by the end profile of the in-situ RC cantilever beams. ‘House made by many hands’ Concrete report - Working against the grain and thinking outside the conventional steel-and-stud-wall box, emerging architecture practice Cairn has pioneered the use of a new low-carbon concrete in its latest project – a house renovation and extension in Hackney, east London.

Black House Barn is a low-energy home converted from a derelict Grade II-listed barn, which was on the ‘Historic Buildings at Risk’ register. The ancient barn is oak framed, with four bays and dates from circa 15th Century. George Stamos of Stamos Yeoh Architects reports.

The overall standard of images submitted for the 2023 Golden Trowel Awards continued to improve, with a noticeable increase in the number of commercial projects presented. With installations featuring polished concrete floors, concrete skate parks and decorative cementitious renders for artificial-rock-themed work, the decorative concrete driveways, patios and walkways that have been the bedrock of the competition throughout the past 18 years were put to the test.
