When you find out you’re pregnant you can often be overwhelmed by gifts and advice for the baby. If you want recommendations (from someone whose been caring for babies for over 20 years) my favourite baby skin care and must buys for new parents head over to my blog
Teaching Positive Associations With Sleep
What is the most beneficial thing you can do for your physical and mental health? SLEEP! 💤💫🙌 It’s important to remember that it’s not always about achieving a full solid nights sleep, but adopting good sleep habits which roll on from baby to toddler to childhood - and then through to becoming an adult. Order your copy of my complete guide (newborn stage and beyond) if you and your baby need a little help catching some decent Zzzz's!

During the newborn stage establishing your milk supply can be affected by everything you do, even emotions and energy levels have an affect. Your body is recovering from the birth, which uses energy to heal; the lack of sleep, emotions and simple daily activities can zap your body of the energy needed to make milk. With supply and demand, often the demand is ahead of your supply!
Premature babies are often born sleepy and not interested in latching or feeding for the first few days. This doesn’t work well for breast stimulation and getting lactation going. Getting a good start with lots of short, active bursts of stimulation either by baby or breast pump will be more stimulating for milk supply than waiting for your baby to decide he’s ready to feed or leaving a baby to comfort suck on an empty breast which can cause nipple damage.
I often get asked, what’s the best age to book a holiday with my new baby? On my routine starting during the newborn stage and well established, around 4 months of age is the best time. Just before weaning and sleeping well at night. I offer holiday and flight consultations to help adjust your baby’s routine to time differences and flight times.
Change your baby’s nappy after feeds during the day – most babies dirty their nappies while feeding. If you do change before a feed, change the nappy again after the feed to ensure the nappy lasts through to the next feed.
I love Mustela newborn shampoo and body wash for bath time. I have been using Mustela for years! You don’t need to wash your baby every day even if you bath every day as part of your routine but Mustela is gentle enough to do so. Mustela’s cradle cap range is also great. Let’s talk about Dads! When breastfeeding your newborn, how much of a look in does your partner get? Especially when they are at work all day. On my routine I encourage partners to get home and take over the bath and bedtime routine, have a skin on skin cuddles at weekends and join in at feed times with winding, nappy changes and bonding during playtime. It’s all about teamwork.
Did you know that research shows babies are ready to wean between 4-6 months and not all babies can wait until six months as commonly advised. Sleep regression is a clear sign your baby is ready. Starting when your baby is ready to wean instead of waiting allows a slow and pressure free weaning process, it’s also kinder to the digestive system to start with a few spoons a day and build to three meals over the course of a few months rather than weeks.
Have you started tummy time with your newborn during play time yet? The later you leave it the less likely a baby will enjoy tummy time but it’s essential for neck strength and core development. Wait half an hour after a feed to allow for digestion and avoid throw ups! Some babies will love it and drift off to sleep but make sure you don’t let this happen and switch back to the back for playtime. For more information check out my chapter on awake and stimulation.
Buying baby clothes? My top tip is to buy clothes by weight instead of age. 0-3 month baby clothes could fit a baby of a weight from 2.7kg to 6kg!
These two gorgeous cuties are waiting for their baby massage. Massaging your baby before bed promotes relaxation and sleep.
A little entertainment and stimulation that’s so easy to make. Have you made your own black and white baby book yet? You obviously don’t need amazing art skills for a successful book 🙈
It’s such a lovely time of year, I love the autumn colours! But did you know that a newborn is unlikely to awake in motion whilst venturing out? Fresh air and pram pushing will rock your baby to sleep. On my routine, time awake after day feeds are important for digestion not to mention being happiest time to play, having just been fed. Plan around this by taking walks and going out and about during nap time.
