This is a painting inspired by a visit to Topsail State Park in Santa Rosa Beach, FL. As I peeked through the foliage at Morris Lake, I was rewarded with a sighting of a lovely blue heron. This heron turned out to be quite a muse for me. I’ve painted her numerous times in different ways. I painted my first outdoor piece of art, The Grayt Cow, on a 9’ x 8’ pressure-treated wooden panel made by local artisan, William Whalley. I then sealed, gessoed, and painted with Golden Acrylic Paints and sealed with UVA varnish to protect her from the Florida sun. She proudly stands on Garfield Street, adjacent to The Red Bar in Grayton Beach, FL. I think she speaks to many visitors to Grayton Beach and certainly reflects the fun and funky Grayton vibe. In November 2018, I was looking for a beach house to rent for Thanksgiving. One popped up that seemed perfect. I wrote to the owner to request the booking and she wrote back and said, “Is this my favorite artist? You’re in luck we just had a cancellation.” It turned out the owner was one of my first oil painting collectors. Oyster Lake’s outfall meanders along under a bridge and, most days almost connects with the gulf. I always get excited when it actually does connect and its tea-colored water mixes beautifully with the turquoise gulf. While driving back home from the studio after an afternoon storm, the water was clear, calm, and brilliantly turquoise. The sky was dark and moody. On a foggy morning in March 2020, I drove past Allen Lake. It too was in fog, but a lovely tree stand in the middle of the lake stood out. I thought for a minute and turned the car around, stopped at Stinky’s Fish Camp, and took some photos of the lake. Later in the studio, I looked back at the photos and cropped one that looked promising. Could I translate this beautiful foggy feeling into a painting? I saw it. Appalachian Mountains

This is a painting of the beautiful sand dunes in NW Florida. Over thousands of years, as the Appalachian Mountains weathered, quartz and other particles were washed down through the Apalachicola River, ending in the Gulf. This fellow is a favorite muse of mine. I’ve painted him loads of times and never tire of it. I remember the sunny afternoon we met on the beach at Topsail Hill Preserve Park in Santa Rosa Beach, FL. Path | Giclée Print

There’s a secret about this painting... I painted it wrong. I grabbed a canvas that had been re-purposed, meaning I started another painting on it with oil paint, wiped it off, then painted on it with acrylic (for some reason), then down the road, grabbed it AGAIN to paint “Path”. A few months ago, a woman came into the studio. She quietly walked all around, then pointed to “Path”. "I want that one", she said, “I know it’s flawed. And that’s what makes it even more beautiful.” Happy ending.

'Watershed' was inspired by Lake Powell - the largest of the coastal dune lakes. It was a lovely spring day painting with the Emerald Coast Plein Air Painters. I was located way in the back of the park, just before the bridge, overlooking the lake and tree stand to my right. My on-location painting from that day was the inspiration for the 2 larger, more abstract paintings that followed. This is one of them and was the largest piece in the collection at 48” x 60”.
