HILL HOUSE in Helensburgh, Scotland is one of Charles Rennie Mackintosh's most famous works, probably second only to Glasgow School of Art. It was designed and built for the publisher Walter Blackie in 1902 – 1904.
Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964) was down to earth and pragmatist like no designer before him. He disregarded ornamentation and prefered cheap materials. His famous red-bleu easy chair of 1919 became admired by Theo van Doesburg of De Stijl movement. Rietveld became a member of De Stijl, which desolved in the thirties. This simple design dates from the mid-fifties and is called 'military' chair because it was meant for the canteen of the Military School in Utrecht.
