Morriston Hospital, Swansea
At Morriston Hospital in Swansea, BAM is involved at every level. From car parks and offices to the flagship new entrance. The hospital is gradually undergoing a massive redevelopment to replace pre-war buildings with new facilities fit for 21st century medicine. All under the auspices of the Welsh Health Estate ‘Designed for Life’ Framework. Construction has to go on as unobtrusively as possible, alongside everyday life of the existing hospital.

Systems Medicine Building
We’re building the new Systems Medicine Building for the Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine (IGMM) at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh. Connecting all three existing buildings, it will provide a central atrium as well as a new iconic frontage that will change the face of the east side of the hospital site. As befitting a leading-edge research facility, there’s a deliberate emphasis on green issues and sustainability. The project is targeting a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

Wharfedale Locality Hospital, Otley
A PFI funded project, BAM PPP was responsible for the delivery of the scheme and worked with sister companies BAM Construction and BAM Facilities Management to build, and now maintain, the new hospital. Our Facilities Manager helped the hospital cut their operating theatre electricity use by 28% - by investigating the need for air conditioning in unused operating theatres.

Institute of Transplantation, Newcastle In 2011, we built the UK’s first purpose-built Institute of Transplantation (IoT), through the ProCure21 framework, at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, which is world renowned for pioneering transplant surgery. The new building is a direct response to the government’s Organ Donation Taskforce recommendation to increase the number of organ donations by 50% by 2013, which was achieved. Aintree University Hospital, Liverpool
Aintree University Hospital in Liverpool. Work on the new, £35 million urgent care and trauma centre at the Aintree University Hospital, just outside Liverpool, is well under way. The project will transform the hospital’s emergency and urgent care services, creating the most modern Emergency Department in the region and offering state-of-the-art facilities for patients.

Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge - BAM
Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge. BAM worked at an entirely different scale to develop their new building, which gives them twice as much space as their former facility.The design of the new building represents an X-shaped chromosome and is both striking to look at and excellent to work in, with a large atrium and circulation space joining two assymetrical blocks. It incorporates state-of-the-art facilities for some 400 scientists and 200 support staff.

Selby Community Project. BAM built a civic centre and a hospital on the same Selby site in an innovative project to improve facilities for patients as well as hospital and council staff. We constructed the three-storey hospital and two-bedroom office block on vacant land next to the existing War Memorial Hospital. Then we demolished the old hospital and put in car parking facilities and landscaped gardens. The building secured a BREEAM Excellent rating.

The Redwoods Centre, Shrewsbury
The Redwood Centre, Shrewsbury. BAM built a modern mental health village to replace the Victorian era Shelton Hospital in Shrewsbury. The 112-bed Redwoods Centre was opened in September 2012 offering service users the highest standards of care in a far more comfortable environment. The facility achieved BREEAM Excellent rating. It uses natural ventilation, is highly insulated and generates some of its own heat and power.
