Anto's cousin and "guru", Michael O'Brien: dishes

Michael O'Brien, master potter, expert in the fields of ash glazing and wood-fired kiln design. Student and colleague of Pioneer Potter Michael Cardew, whom he succeeded as director of the Abuja Pottery Training Centre in 1962. Square dishes and butter dishes are among his finest works.

"Kuba" dish. Low temperature stoneware.
Small dish, about 8" square, from Michael OBrien's latest test of low-temperature glazes for Bwari Pottery Abuja, using Nigerian raw material;s for the glaze. The design is based on Kuba raffia fabric design. 31.7.2020.
This is a most unusual Michael OBrien butter dish. The glaze is a thin jun over black slip, with iron oxide brushwork covering most of the visible surface. Maybe his best ever.
