Pirate's Cove, Polperro, Cornwall. Smuggling prospered in Polperro when it was developed as a port in the 12th c. & reached it's zenith in the late 18th c. when Britain's wars w/ America & France hastened high taxation of imported goods. Local fisherman boosted their income by smuggling spirits, tobacco & other goods from Guernsey. A more organized Coast Guard service was introduced in the 19th c. along w/ stiff penalties, & led to much less smuggling.
