#William_Morris named "Wandle" (1884) for the river that ran through Merton Abbey Works "to honour our helpful stream". It contained soft water, important in dyeing textiles. He perfected the ancient art of indigo discharge printing, which involves dyeing #fabric in #indigo. The design is printed using bleaching agents. This example shows the pattern after its 1st. application, before colors are added. The white areas are fully discharged & pale blue shows areas where a weaker agent was used...
