British Empire in India during the 1850s systematically undermined the local Indian textile cottage industries that had produced cloth and clothing by hand for millennia. The British CUT OFF the middle fingers of master weavers in Dhaka to prevent them from weaving fine clothes that was of great quality and beautiful design. In India textiles is still the second biggest industry. Natural, biodegradable fabrics are still preferred instead of the synthetic fibres and machine-made fabrics.
