Pulled Thread Embroidery
"Pulled thread embroidery uses counted thread stitches from the common stock set of embroidery stitches, but works them pulled with strong tension[,...] creat[ing] a lace-like effect. No threads of the fabric are removed or cut out. Do not confuse this with drawn thread work, a form of embroidery in which some fabric threads are pulled out and removed, leaving thin areas. In drawn thread work these thinned out areas are then decorated in various ways." Quoted from link. Work by Tatiana Tara
Day Dress | Unknown | V&A Explore The Collections
Closeup on day dress, c. 1904-08. If you don't see the pure awesomeness of this, allow me to explain: Every trim here is hand made. Someone, about a century ago, sat down, plotted this, bought the materials and built it, forming minute stitches one by one. The lace was knotted thread by thread. The embroidery stitch by stitch. each pintuck, folded and stitched down by hand. Yards and yards of work. This humbles me.

#Broderie anglaise (French) or "English Embroidery" (in Dutch: Engels kant) is a "whitework needlework" technique incorporating features of embroidery, cutwork and needle lace that arose in England in the 19th century. White-work embroidery is one of the techniques employed in heirloom sewing for blouses, christening gowns, baby bonnets, and other small articles.
