The Late Victorian Whitby Jet Bangle... or is it?
So how can you spot jet and its many imitators? "Like Whitby Jet But Not" comes in many forms: modern plastic, glass (known as French Jet), bog oak, coal, Bakelite, horn or Vulcanite, from the planet Vulcan. OK I made that last bit up, but the Vulcanite is real, an early plastic that turns a sepia colour with age, it was branded with the rather wonderful name Ebonite and was very popular as fake jet in Victorian times...
Ronson patented the mechanism that lets these lighters be operated with one hand. In a piece of genuine vintage copywriting, they marketed this feature with the line: "A flip - and it's lit! Release - and it's out!". Ronson also did things differently by designing lighters for women. Tiny. Delicate. Sparkly. Mini Purse, Leaf Pattern, The Line, Purse, For Women

When Emily Kitchin married Mr Arthur Turner Waite in September 1878, she wore this dress. They took their vows at St Mary’s Church, Scarborough. The dress is cream satin; a very expensive bridal gown. Two layers gloriously entwined in a notched hem. Like a cog wheel, this is the detail to note: are we looking at a Victorian bridal gown here, or a steampunk costume? 1879 Fashion, Extant Garments, York Castle, Cog Wheel, Castle Museum, Victorian Wedding Dress, Victorian Wedding, Steampunk Costume, Steampunk Style

Should it be the classic red rose? I don't think so. Petals with buttermilk highs and saffron lows are a much smarter buy. You can don jade green, damson purple, crimson red, royal blue or the soft caramels of Autumn’s essential camel coat: this golden beauty will flourish on every lapel. The details on the back? Dorothy Ann. China. Made in England. Soft Caramels, China Rose, Antique Pins, Soft Caramel, Rose Brooch, China Jewelry, Crimson Red, Camel Coat, Beaded Purses

Silk hand woven with a new technique that made it so glossy and so coveted that a dress made from it, this dress, would be continually altered over 100 years to keep that precious fabric in fashion and in sight. From its creation in 1770 through to the 1880s, this garment has been stitched, and cut, and taken in, and let out to keep it en vogue. It greets my eyes as a Polonaise Gown with bumptious bustle; its last fandango.
