SO AWESOME! It was Nazi Germany in 1936, and a crowd of people had gathered in Hamburg to watch the launch of a navy training vessel. As hundreds raised their arms in unison in the Nazi salute, one man stood with his arms crossed, his eyes squinting at whoever was leading the salute. It was not until 1991 that the man was identified as August Landmesser, a worker at the Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg, by one of his children, after she saw the photo in a German newspaper. Mary Fields, nickname Stagecoach Mary, was a former slave who became the first African-American woman to work for the US postal service when, about age 60, she was the fastest applicant to hitch up a team of 6 horses in the Montana Territory. She wore a pistol under her apron and when the snow was too deep for the horses she would carry the mail on her back and deliver it on snowshoes. She never missed a day. When the town of Cascade banned women from saloons, the mayor granted her an exemption. African American Women, Black History Facts, African, Black History
