This is what I call dead water.

It’s where you lose pressure, lose control, and lose your speed.

The problem is… your arm naturally wants to go there.

It feels easier — there’s less resistance. But that’s exactly why it doesn’t work.

❌ Side-to-side movement

❌ No vertical forearm

❌ Water slips through your fingers

❌ You waste energy without real propulsion

Here’s what to do instead:

✅ Start your catch slightly wider than your shoulder line

✅ Pull straight back — no inward sweep

✅ Keep your hand under your elbow, with a vertical forearm

✅ Find the right elbow bend that lets you hold water without overpowering

Andrii Khloptsov | Swim Coach on Instagram: "If you keep lifting or turning your head by itself — you’re breaking your whole stroke. Here’s what happens: ❌ Water hits your mouth ❌ Legs sink ❌ Timing gets thrown off ❌ Your body position collapses Most triathletes don’t realize this — but your head should follow your shoulder rotation, not move independently. ✅ When it’s time to breathe, let your head roll *with* your body. ✅ Don’t lead with your face — follow your torso. ✅ This keeps your timing tight and your line smooth. Your head is not the boss — your body is. Fix this, and you’ll breathe easier, hold better position, and stop fighting the water every stroke. — If you want to fix your breathing, posture, and full stroke mechanics like a pro — Comment “TRAINING” and I’ll sh

Andrii Khloptsov | Swim Coach on Instagram: "If you start your catch *while you’re still breathing* — you’re doing it wrong.

Most triathletes pull with one arm *while* their head is still turned for air.

Here’s what that does:

❌ You disconnect your catch from your rotation

❌ You only recruit the shoulder, not the full body

❌ You burn out faster and overload the joint

❌ You increase your chance of shoulder injury over time

Here’s the fix:

✅ Breathe.

✅ Let your head start returning to neutral.

✅ Then start the catch.

This lets you engage the chest, lats, and most importantly — your rotation.

The result?

A smoother, stronger stroke that feels easier *and* lasts longer.

💥 It’s just like throwing a punch.

You don’t jab with just your arm — you twist your whole body for power.

The most efficient freestyle stroke involves pulling straight back or slightly inward under your body—where your strongest muscles (lats, pecs, core) can engage.

A wide catch moves your hand out of the power zone, so you’re not pushing as much water backward (which is what moves you forward)." Best Swimmer, Strong Muscles, Swimming, Water, Instagram

a man swimming in a pool with the caption still getting out of breath when you swim?
Andrii Khloptsov | Swim Coach on Instagram: "If you feel out of shape in the water — chances are it’s not your fitness. It’s your breathing technique. Here’s how to fix it: 1️⃣ Breathe every 2 strokes. Breathing every 3 might sound balanced, but it limits your oxygen and disrupts rhythm. Every 2 strokes gives your muscles a steady supply of oxygen and helps you stay relaxed, efficient, and in control — especially in longer swims. 2️⃣ Start exhaling as soon as your head turns back down. Don’t hold your breath between strokes. A light, continuous exhale through your nose keeps your breathing cycle smooth and prevents that breathless, panicked feeling from building up. Think about it this way — when you walk down the street, you don’t hold your breath between steps. You inhale and exhal

Andrii Khloptsov | Swim Coach on Instagram: "If your catch feels easy — it’s not working. If it feels hard — you’re finally doing it right. Most triathletes never learn how to actually *grab* water. They slip through it. They “go through the motions.” And then wonder why they’re not getting faster — no matter how many laps they swim. Here’s the truth: 👉 If it suddenly feels harder to move your hand and forearm — that’s a good thing. It means you’re connecting. It means you’re catching *more* water. Here’s a 3-step routine I teach inside my program that’s helped hundreds of swimmers finally get it right: 1️⃣ Shoulder to cheek. When your arm enters the water, your shoulder should stay close to your face. This keeps your body tight and sets up your arm in the best position to cat
a person swimming in a pool with the words 2 reasons you're not floating right
Andrii Khloptsov | Swim Coach on Instagram: "Efficient swimming is all about creating as little drag as possible in the water. That’s why our main goal is to stay streamlined — and not let any part of the body break the line or stick out, especially the head or legs. Let’s talk about the two body parts that decide whether you stay high on the surface — or start sinking. First one is your head. Your head position controls your entire bodyline. If it’s wrong — you’ll instantly drop your hips and shoulders, and your stroke will fall apart. 👉 The key? Keep your head relaxed and stable — don’t move it at all except when you breathe. Ideally, you should be looking about 1 meter in front of you at the bottom of the pool, with the back of your head dry. If you look directly down, your he
